The vacancy details are as follows:

*Purpose/objectives*

This project aims to listen and attune the public to the recently displaced Ukrainian community who are escaping war in their country. The studentship offers an opportunity for an academic or student to come to the UK and engage with the migrant community here and gather a record of their experiences to understand their contributions here in Britain as a displaced community in a conflict situation.

The studentship provides opportunity that might not be otherwise available in their home country and will offer valuable learning for a British audience of the contributions of the refugees who yearn for home they were forced to leave.

*Project description*

The current conflict in Ukraine has taken an enormous toll on the country and its people, millions of whom have fled in search of safety throughout Europe, including more than 115,000in the UK. This influx has had an impact on UK society which this research aims to identify and disseminate. Through an exploration of the displaced, and often marginalised, Ukrainian community within Derby and Derbyshire (currently numbering 1,315), this study aims to represent a microcosm of the Ukrainian experience in contemporary Britain as a whole – Derby itself being a highly diverse and multicultural city.

The successful candidate will work with the Ukrainian migrants using a community-based approach and be invited to offer further input into the research design. This proposed doctoral project will be a qualitative-led investigation drawing upon artistic and mediatic practice, using the skillset of the researcher to gather and curate the experiences of migrants via in-depth semi-structured interviews to camera.

The work will have the capacity to improve social, ethnic and cultural tolerance and inform policy development by improving the understanding of migrants and their contribution to economic growth, an argument that is often overlooked in current debates on immigration. By publishing the rich qualitative findings via a curated practice-based output, the research will demonstrate how the creative and cultural industries can have positive impacts on society and instigate change.

The project will be collaborative and engage with the particular characteristics of Ukrainian society and modes of expression that are unique to their culture. The interviews will yield valuable qualitative data for analysis and contribute to existing knowledgeon the Ukrainian diaspora and serve as an artefact of oral history.

The incorporation of the practical component will allow for an original interpretation of the primary research material and extend the engagement and impact of the study beyond academia through public exhibition. This project will comprise 30% creative media practice and 70% theory. Experience in media practice will be a requirement of the successful candidate.
