*Conference Description*

At an historical moment of both pandemic and post-pandemic, in a period of global political, financial, infrastructural and climate crisis, there has been a cultural turn towards discourses of care.

How have notions of care and wellbeing been theorised in relation to film, theatre and television? How have pandemic “recoveries” shaped film, theatre and television industries in particular local and national contexts? How have discourses of care marked pandemic and post-pandemic theatre, film and television? How have and can film, television, and theatre, promote compassion and social responsibility, and advocate for the cause of caring for others, the environment and shared cultures and cultural heritages in this era of change?

This interdisciplinary postgraduate conference aims to examine developments and changes in theatre and screen practices, in commercial, independent and therapeutic contexts, in the aftermath of the pandemic. In doing so we seek to analyse shifts in attitudes towards the future in a world where hierarchies of care, trust, and attention are being reflected upon and re-established. Topics might include but are not limited to:

  * The representation and impact of care in theatre, film and television
  * How television, film and theatre can be a force for change in
    debates about care
  * Care for each other, for the environment, food security, migration,
    and cultural legacies as interconnected issues
  * Shifts in aesthetic and industry practice in film, theatre and
    television in specific local/national contexts
  * Visions of the future, and the futures of care, in television, film
    and theatre.
  * Heritage and preservation contexts, including digital access and
    inclusive programming
  * Care and intersectional experiences in film, theatre and television
  * Diverse, non-institutional care networks and communities
  * Ethical dimensions of creative and cultural practices and research

We encourage and welcome proposals from postgraduate scholars, researchers, researchers by practice, artists, and activists engaged in film, theatre, and television studies and related disciplines, in a variety of formats, including:

  * 20 minute papers
  * Preconstituted panels with up to 3 papers
  * Video essays

The conference will be a hybrid event taking place in Minghella Studios at the University of Reading and online, and we will include online and in-person presentations and panel members. We aim to offer a supportive and inclusive environment for dialogue and discussion.

*Please send abstracts of 300-500 words by 10 May 2023, to **(ruidi.xu /at/ pgr.reading.ac.uk)**and **(claire.gould /at/ pgr.reading.ac.uk)***

**

We look forward very much to hearing from you.
