Call for papers & project presentations
Smart Storytelling Day
Symposium & Showcase
#MINA2018: Towards a Theory & Practice of Smart Storytelling
Special Issue in Studies in Documentary Film journal
(MSchleser /at/ swin.edu.au)
MINA, the Mobile Innovation Network & Association (www.mina.pro) creates connections between communities, creative industries & content production. Following on from the successful symposium in 2016, we are excited to announce the 7th Mobile Innovation and Mobile Creativity symposium at Swinburne University of Technology alongside the 8th International Mobile, Pocket and Smartphone film Screening in November 2018. Smart Storytelling embraces the potential for opening storytelling to new forms and formats. In an inclusive, dynamic and provocative environment this symposium is focused on exploring developments towards generative storytelling and its implications for re-shaping screen-based practices of storytelling. How do these developments reconfigure relationships between the disciplines in creative arts? How do they (re-)define the engagement of collaborators, from participants to audiences? Smart Storytelling leverages contemporary digital transformations in Screen Production, Digital Media and the Creative Arts. The last five years have seen intense investment from technology giants such as Adobe, Alphabet, Apple and Facebook into Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) as connectivity hubs in the mediascape. These are in turn prompting new processes and creative workflows. Accessible AR is positioned as offering the potential to transform any space into a storytelling canvas, while VR is discussed as an ‘empathy machine’ in news and research labs. Smartphones are claimed to enable VR/AR for the masses in the production as well as in the viewing experience. Developments towards industry 4.0 (including analytics, algorithms and automation) and ongoing digital transformations continue to disrupt creative industries to produce new business models, production environments and distribution channels. Within this context one can point at IBM’s editing of the Morgan trailer or Adobe’s mobile app strategy that launched a suite of creative mobile apps. Transmedia storytelling and cross-media dissemination have exposed more dynamic approaches towards storytelling and story-making generated from a capacity to creatively engage audiences. As much as innovation occurred in the production process we are interested to investigate the exhibition and dissemination via the potential of block chain and smart contracts; this call is interested in the ramifications of these for non-fiction, documentary making, experimental film, moving-image and the creative arts more generally. The symposium will explore novel forms and new formats of non-fiction and documentary relating to community engagement and creative transformations. It will include recent developments in the creative industries embracing: -    Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in the context of non-fiction storytelling
-    AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its aesthetic implications
-    Cellphilm theory and practice contexts
-    Database storytelling
-    i-docs (interactive documentary)
-    Refinements of mobile-mentary (mobile documentary)
-    Software culture
This call is interested in creative transformations in storytelling. We see narrative and non-narrative methods as innovation sandboxes to illuminate community engagement and creative transformation. As in previous years, we aim for a combination of theoretical and creative practice research explorations responding to and interacting with the opportunities and potential of emerging media and screen production. Presentations and showcases can include work-in-progress, project presentations, academic papers and conceptual provocations or pose questions at the intersection of storytelling and screen production. We welcome proposals for workshops to run in conjunction with the Smart Storytelling Day. Paper & project abstracts will be double blind peer reviewed. We accept video papers but require presenters to join a Q&A session via Adobe Connect. Selected papers will be published in Special Issue in Studies in Documentary Film journal
https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rsdf20/current.
Studies in Documentary Film is the first refereed scholarly journal devoted to the history, theory, criticism and practice of documentary film.
