CHINED V – EXTENSION OF THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

The Fifth International Conference on Historical News Discourse – CHINED V – will be held at University Fernando Pessoa, in the Faulty of Social and Human Sciences, in Porto, Portugal, from 11 to 12 June.

We would like to invite presentations on news reporting from the Early Modern English to the dawn of the twentieth century, in a variety of approaches, ranging from more historical perspectives on different types of publications, to pragmatics and sociolinguistics studies, including applied linguistics. Thus, themes and sub-themes will include:

MAIN THEME AND SUB-THEMES:

Shaping realities in news reporting from Early Modern English to the dawn of the twentieth century.

•SOCIO-HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

- How can historical events be inferred from news discourse (for example, the positioning of newspapers vis-a-vis the major historical events of the period / How did newspapers discursively reflect the major historical events)?

- What was the role of news publications in the shaping of social and political circumstances?

- How do the different styles of news publication echo existing social settings?

•DISCOURSE PRACTICES:

- Alterations in print practices during the period and their effect on reporting news

- Emerging journalistic discourses

- Linguistic shapings of the journalistic style

Abstracts of 300 words, in ENGLISH, the Conference’s official language, should be sent through the link provided in the conference site, by the 8th of February, and a notification of acceptance will be sent by the 15th of February. Abstracts will be evaluated by members of the Scientific Advisory Board.
