7TH SCREENWRITING RESEARCH NETWORK INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Screenwriting & Directing audiovisuaL Media
OCTOBER 16 – 19, 2014
at Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf
Researchers, authors and directors will present and discuss the relationship
between writing and directing for audio-visual media today, in the past,
and in
the future – for Cinema, TV, fi ctional and non-fi ctional, Games and
cross-media
productions.
Screenwriting research is a relatively new fi eld in media studies. The
Network
was initiated and established at the University of Leeds in 2006.
Screenwriting,
the generation of ideas, and the process of development of screen ideas,
are complex collaborative creative activities. Researchers in the fi eld
discuss
questions about existing and future industrial practices, structures,
and power,
about cultural variation and infl uence, and about individual taste,
judgement
and habitus.
A screenplay is both a process and a product, surrounded by industrial
convention, and rarely questioned as an appropriate industrial tool. The
value
of research activity on screenwriting is important both for
practitioners and for
theorists, if indeed these can be separated. It lies in the
comprehensive critical
analysis of the screenplay format, and of screen idea development practices,
from diff erent informed viewpoints, in mapping conventional practice,
and in the
possible development of potential forms of expression and documentation of
the screen idea, outside current conventions.
The conference is open to the public. Please register by sending an
