Media & Jornalismo: Special issue “Media education in a digital age”
The topic of media education has attracted growing attention from
researchers internationally, both from the field of communication and
from education. On the ground, there are several projects from public,
private and civil actors.
The international dialogue that Portugal has developed around media
education has mostly established connections with Europe and Brazil,
with an agenda of citizens’ (especially of children and young people)
inclusion and empowerment for participation in social life (Carlsson et
al., 2008). Looking at the media in the scope of everyday life, it is
considered that the inclusion and empowerment for digital media is
interlinked with the need to increase civic literacy, that requires the
involvement of several actors, from the youngsters to parents and
schools, as well as stakeholders. In this context, informal contexts
have gained momentum, with a political focus on lifelong learning.
From the work and research developed in the project RadioActive Europe,
funded by the European Commission, we promote a special issue on media
education projects in Portugal and internationally, focusing on digital
media in formal and informal learning environments; radio and its
participatory and educational potential; contrasts and interlinks
between formal and informal environments; and intervention/pedagogical
strategies focused on digital media in lifelong learning, given the
focus of RadioActive (exploring online radio possibilities for
empowerment and inclusion of young people at risk of exclusion and in
informal settings). Other suggested, but not exclusive, topics, are:
digital literacies, transliteracies, assessment of literacy competences,
and participatory methodologies.

Papers should be below 50.000 characters (incluing spaces and notes);
authors' guidelines can be accessed at

We also accept book reviews, in the areas of interest of the journal,
with up to 8000 characters.
Papers and reviews can be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish,
and should be sent to (anajorge /at/ fcsh.unl.pt) until February 15th 2015.
Papers will undergo a double blind review process.
