ECREA 2014 PRE-CONFERENCE
Theoretical Territories Revisited: Emerging challenges of media and
migration research
Universidade Lusófona (ULHT) Lisbon, Portugal
Date: 11th November 2014
Organized by Nordic TheoryNord Network and ECREA Working Group of
Diaspora, Migration and the Media
Website: http://theorynord.wordpress.com/
CALL FOR PAPERS
Research on media, migration, race and ethnicity has increased
substantially in the Nordic countries and in other parts of Europe
during the past two decades. We have seen proliferation of variety of
studies on the representation of race and ethnicity in media as well
as empirical and ethnographic audience research on media use among
ethnic minorities and diasporic groups.
However, there is an increasing need to identify the emerging
theoretical challenges in the field that respond to the
transformations shaped by globalization, transnationalism and
technological mediation in the European contexts. Connections between
media studies, political science, anthropology, sociology, political
economy and cultural studies are needed to critically explore the
field of media and migration research. The cross-border and
transnational identifications challenge nationally bound theorizations
of citizenship and belonging, nevertheless they point out the force of
national imaginations and exclusionary practices. The convergent media
environment increasingly shaped by commercial corporations and data
gathering poses questions concerning the power and materiality of race
and ethnicity in digital era. Moreover recent changes in the political
landscape of Europe with emerging populism and anti-immigrant
sentiment call for critical inquiry on the theorizations of political
and social movements and their relations to social media.
We invite theoretically informed papers that discuss these challenges
in the area of media and migration research. Potential areas of
inquiry may include but are not limited to:
-Theorizations of race, ethnicity and intersectionality
-Whiteness studies
-Affectivity, emotions and politics of race, ethnicity and gender
-Theories of public sphere from the perspective of race and ethnicity,
concepts of multi-ethnic public sphere and sphericules
-Boundaries of citizenship and digital participation
-Mediatization and transnational life
-Political economy of social media and materialities of race and gender
-Politics of popular imaginations and difference
-Racialized histories
-Cosmopolitanism, transnationalism, welfare state nationalism
-Media policies of multiculturalism and diversity
Papers submitted will be considered for an international peer-reviewed
journal publication.
