[ecrea] ICON: CFA for Academic Quarter
Thu May 01 13:00:18 GMT 2014
It’s a pleasure to bring your attention to an upcoming issue of the
journal Academic Quarter on the theme of ICON in literature, film, media
and culture and to invite you to send in abstracts for suggested articles.
Issue 10 of Academic Quarter on the topic of Icon aims to bring together
scholars from at least the following fields: Imagology, cultural
semiotics, star studies, fashion studies, film and media history, art
history, literary history, and cultural studies to initiate an
exploration of the phenomenon of cultural iconicity. Scholars from other
fields of humanistic research are welcome to contribute as well. We seek
contributions analyzing the phenomenon of cultural iconicity in the
following areas of study: literature, music, art, fashion, film and
other visual media, including photography. We seek both papers that
contribute further to the theorization of the field and its concepts,
and (primarily) papers that offer analyses of specific cases of cultural
iconicity.
For the purpose of this issue we propose the following definition of a
cultural icon:
A commercialized, yet sacralized visual, aural or textual representation
anchored in a specific temporal/historical and spatial/geographical
context broadly recognized by its recipients as having iconic status for
a group of human agents within one or several discursive
fields/communities. Cultural iconicity can be carried by the
representation of a person, a place, or an epoch/historical moment. The
iconicity of a human representation is furthered through the human icon
having agency to act in a cultural space anchored in time, and by the
consumers of cultural iconicity having agency to do ‘icon work’ on those
representations, whether taking the form of collaborative iconolatry or
adversarial
iconoclasm.
The first step is to submit an abstract of about 150 words to Helle
Thorsøe Nielsen ((htnielsen /at/ cgs.aau.dk)) and to Bent Sørensen
((bent /at/ cgs.aau.dk)) by May 15, 2014. By June 1, 2014 the editors will have
reviewed the abstracts and notified the authors of their decisions.
Accepted articles – using the Chicago System Style Sheet – should then
be e-mailed to the editors no later than August 15, 2014. Articles will
then be reviewed anonymously. The articles should be around
15,000-25,000 keystrokes (3,000-3,500 words), and they can be written in
English or in the Scandinavian languages. Assuming that the articles are
accepted by the peer reviewers and the editors, they should be
revised, and final version of article sent in by November 15, 2014.
