[ecrea] Call for applications: AHRC workshop: Skills for Media Engagement
Fri Apr 25 08:49:16 GMT 2014
Impact and engagement are at the heart of research and it has
become more and more crucial for academics to find ways of translating
their research for public consumption and circulation. Understanding how
the media works, how to collaborate with media partners and to reach
appropriate media outlets at different stages of research are crucial in
this context. Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are vital to the health
and continued growth of such collaborations and need to be equipped with
the relevant skills to think about the public possibilities of their
research. ‘Skills for Media Engagement’ is an AHRC-funded Collaborative
Skills project led by Dr Eylem Atakav (University of East Anglia) in
collaboration with Professor Derek Matravers (Open University).
Please visit our blog http://skills4media.wordpress.com/, catch up
with us on twitter @skills4media, see our poster (attached) and the call
for applications below. Please distribute to any ECR's who might be
interested.
Call for applications
Applications are now being sought for Skills for Media Engagement,
a one-day intensive interactive media training workshop designed to
offer a selected cohort of 20 ECRs specialist skills which will enable
them to communicate effectively with, and for the media - radio,
television, film and online media. The workshop relies on intense
discussion and collaborative activity and will bring early career
researchers (ECRs) together with media professionals, including Chris
Jameson and Tony Prideaux (Inside Edge Media Training), Samira Ahmed
(freelance journalist), Jodi Thompson (Huffington Post) and Lisa Horton
(Media Relations Manager, UEA). ECRs research profiles will be published
via the project website before the workshop and made available to the
media professionals to encourage dialogue with contributors.
Programme
Training will take at a workshop held at the Open University's
Camden site on 16 June 2014.
Key learning outcomes are:
* To gain awareness of how the media works
* To understand the challenges of collaborating with the media
* To learn about strategies for tailoring messages for specific
media outputs and audiences
* To learn how to prepare for media interviews
* To develop the confidence and skills required to deliver
research ideas and contribute to debates through the media
Eligibility
Early career researcher applicants must be within eight years of
the award of their PhD or equivalent professional training, or within
six years of their first academic appointment. ECR applicants must also
have a contractual arrangement with a UK research organisation.
Application procedure
Applications should be made online through the electronic
application form.
For further information, please contact Dr Matthew Sillence at
(m.sillence /at/ uea.ac.uk).
Extended deadline: 8th May 2014
Selection Criteria
The selection process will choose ECRs who have a passion for
communicating their scholarship to a wider audience; who are willing to
use their expertise to collaborate with media partners; and who have an
interest in creating broader cultural debates through their arts and
humanities related research. Applications will be reviewed by the
Advisory Team (UEA and Open University) and 20 candidates will be
selected with due regard to the creation of a diverse cohort from across
the Consortium and across a range of subject areas.
The assessment will be made on the basis of applicant's answers to
three questions:
1. How will this training benefit your research and personal
development plan?
2. How could your research make an engaging and stimulating
programme (radio/television) or an interesting blog article?
3. Do you have any experience of or plans for collaborating with
media partners?
A 100-word biography is required, but this is not a formal part of
the application criteria, but will be used for participant profiles on
the programme's website.
All the best
