A Call for Papers/Presentations

                                        The Journal of Media Practice and MeCCSA Practice Network Symposium
                                                                                hosted by

                                         The Practice as Research Group, Roehampton University London

                                                                        Image-Movement-Story

                                                                             14th June 2014

Image – Movement – Story is a one day symposium focusing on practice as research and practice based research to explore inter-disciplinary approaches to the connection between the still and moving image, and to examine the relationship between artefact and audience.

The suggested areas for reflection are Story; Documentary; Multi-imaging; New Technologies; Image; Practice and Theory.

Other related topics, but not limited to, might include the following:
•      The use of films and video in areas of research.
•      Art films, gallery films, installations or cinema?
•      The nature of practice as research in art schools and other institutions– how do they differ?
•      Sonic arts and research
•      How does the research culture in the Academy impact on practice and practice outcomes?
•      Practice as research and how far have we come?
•      Questions of audience in relation to research and work produced under the auspices of research within the Academy
•      Where are the spaces for practice as research and are new ones being established?
•     How does the academic environment view practice?
•      The economy of practice in the Academy (or elsewhere).
We are inviting papers/presentations of 20 minutes in length from filmmakers, video makers, photographers, practitioners, scholars and researchers working and researching in the area of Film, Photography, Documentary, Art Practice, Film studies, Media and Cultural Studies, Communications, digital technologies, and associated subjects.

All proposals accepted for and presented at the conference must be in English and will be eligible for publication in a special symposium edition of the Journal of Media Practice
	
Screening/ Presentations
During the symposium we are planning to exhibit, present and screen photographs, films, videos, sonic pieces and other related material to complement and inform the presentations.   If you would like to have your work shown during the day but do not wish to present, please send a 250 word description of the work including format by the deadline.

What to Send:
Proposals of  not more than 250 words should be submitted by Monday 10th March 2014  to :(PARG /at/ roehampton.ac.uk)
These may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) 50 word bio.

E-mails should be entitled: Image Movement Story Proposal Submission; or Image Movement Story Work Only (for those wanting only to show pieces during the symposium). Please use plain text (Times Roman 12). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in 2 weeks after the deadline, you should assume we did not receive your proposal.  We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

There is a small charge of £25.00 / £15.00 students for the symposium.

Overnight accommodation can be provided for £33.00 or £25.00 per night.

This symposium is hosted by PaRG (Practice as Research Group  - Roehampton University) and supported by MeCCSA Practice Network, the Journal of Media Practice and the Centre for Research in Film and Audiovisual Cultures.

PaRG is a new group of practice based researchers attached to the Centre for Research in Film and Audiovisual Cultures based in the Department of Media Culture and Language at the University of Roehampton London
