Call for Articles             Edited Collection: 21st Century British Cinema

British cinema has undergone significant transformation between the establi=
shment of the UK Film Council in 2000 and its abolition in 2011. In light o=
f recent changes to British film financing brought about by government spen=
ding cuts, it seems a timely moment to reflect on the social, cultural and =
aesthetic significance of British cinema throughout the first decade of the=
 twenty-first century. During this time, the British film industry stimulat=
ed economic investment to create opportunities for a host of film ventures =
for both emerging and established British talent alike. From the internatio=
nal success of the Harry Potter films to the art-house acclaim of Fish Tank=
, British cinema has been characterised by consistency and diversity. The d=
ialogue between British cinema and European and Hollywood cinemas is strong=
er than ever, while the boundaries are weaker. These films of the twenty-fi=
rst century have encouraged renewed reflections on the concept of British c=
inema and its impact on the global market place. Using a wide-ranging selec=
tion of films, this collection will offer a detailed and comprehensive anal=
ysis of British cinema in the 21st century, critically examining its develo=
pment and legacy.=20

The editors welcome interdisciplinary and subject-specific approaches to 21=
st Century British Cinema. Topics may include, but are not limited to: UK F=
ilm Council, British Film Production, Distribution and Exhibition since 200=
1, Short Films, British Cinema Audiences, Devolution and British Film, Brit=
ish Film and Television, British Art Cinema, British Popular Cinema, Britis=
h Music and Film, Straight-to-DVD Production, British Stars, UK Film Indust=
ry and Film Education, Film Funding (National and Regional), British Film a=
nd International Film Festivals, British Film and Digital Media, British Ci=
nema and Europe, British Cinema and Hollywood, British Film Tourism.=20

Articles should be between 5500-6000 words and will be due by April 21, 201=
2.=20

Abstracts of 300-350 words and a brief bio should be sent to M.Carter@shu.a=
c.uk and (E.McFadden /at/ shu.ac.uk)  by August 21, 2011.
