Special Issue on Media and the ‘War on Terror’ in Africa
Ibrahim Seaga Shaw & Suzanne Franks (co-editors)
The post cold war period saw a declining interest in African problems
and conflicts. But following 9/11 Africa suddenly started to attract an
apparent sustained Western media interest again with the emergence of
the ‘war on terror’ frame. How can we therefore explain the role of the
media in first, the failure of the international community to intervene
and avert total disaster in these ‘distant’ African crises, second, in
using the ‘war on terror’ frame to revive Western interest in Africa’s
wars, and finally, how this ‘war on terror’ frame may after all be a
smokescreen for the West’s covert political and/or geostrategic
interests in some potentially rich parts of Africa?
This Special Issue will focus on the local and international media
dimensions of the framing and coverage of ‘war on terror’ within Africa.
The editors especially welcome receiving abstracts from scholars based
in African institutions.
