Where words are sharper than swords

Jönköping University's international conference on Middle East coverage scheduled for October 2-3, 2009.

The role political and economic powers play in shaping media discourses from viewpoints of religion, ideology and control in the Middle East will be the topic of the Hamrin Conference on International Coverage of the Middle East, Oct 2-3 at Jönköping University.

An extraordinary group of media executives, newspaper editors, media scholars will gather to discuss how conflicts are depicted, how the region's peoples see themselves and how the rest of the world sees them. Among the speakers will be

John Williams, World Editor for Newsgathering at the BBC
Tony Burman, Managing Director of Al Jazeera English
Prof. Greg Philo from the Glasgow Media Group at University of Glasgow
Prof. John Maxwell Hamilton, Louisiana State University

The conference will also feature a discussion of how the region is portrayed in the Swedish media by representatives of SVT, Dagens Nyheter, the Church of Sweden, the Jewish Council of Sweden, and the Muslim Council of Sweden. Confirmed speakers include

Lisa Abramowicz from the Jewish Council
Abdirizak Webiri from the Muslim Council
