Violence and Network Society Conference -
School Shootings in the Contemporary Public Life
November 6-7th 2009, Helsinki

Professor Stewart R. Clegg, University of Technology, Sidney
Professor Douglas Kellner, UCLA, Los Angeles.
The two day confernce will take place at the University of Helsinki,
Finland.
The conference organisers would like to invite papers from scholars with
an interest in school shootings in the network society. The conference
aims to be transdisciplinary and we welcome papers from all academic
subject areas.
Possible themes and subject areas include (but are not
limited to):
Journalism: Telling the News about the School
Shootings. Facing the Challenges of the Information Age
- Media and Politics: Internet as the Public Sphere for School Violence
- Media Culture: Circulating Hate The Role of
the New Media Technology and Youth Cultures
- Media and Society: Mourning Rituals in the Network Society
- Organizational Communication: School Shootings and the Official Society
- Organizational Studies: Crisis Management in the Network Society
- Psychology: Fear and Hate in the Network Society
- Ethics: Ethics of the News Gathering
- Violence, Media and Collective Trauma
- Visual Culture: Images of Violence
- Law, Politics and the Age of Insecurity
Interested contributors should send an abstract (maximum 500 words) or a
panel proposal (maximum 500 words, five participants) including full
contact details and information on institutional affiliation(s) to the
organizing committee Chair, Dr Johanna Sumiala, via email
(johanna.sumiala(at)helsinki.fi), conference secretary BSocSc Minttu
Tikka (minttu.mt.tikka(at)helsinki.fi) no later than May 15th, 2009.
Notice of acceptance will be given within a month.
Full papers should be sent (likewise via email) no later than September
15th, 2009.
