Wong Kar-wai, Hong Kong Cinema and Cultural Studies
Session at the ACS Crossroads 2010 in Hong Kong
The Shanghai born Hong Kong cult director Wong
Kar-wai has established a unique visual style
and a complex form of narration which is
determined by strong literary influences.
Although he often is a locally influenced Hong
Kong film-maker his movies are globally known
and appreciated. Starting with the forms and
conventions of Hong Kong genre films, he creates
postmodern art movies by blending literature and
cinema. Taking place in Hong Kong this time, the
ACS Crossroads offers us the unique opportunity
to analyze his work by looking at the cultural
contexts of its production and reception as well
as using contemporary approaches of film and
cultural studies to explore his art world right
at the place where his best works were shot.
