[ecrea] CFP for a panel on The Silent Figure in Film, Literature and Culture

Wed Sep 09 10:59:03 GMT 2009

*_CALL FOR PAPERS_*

NeMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) 41^st Annual Conference

McGill University, Montreal, April 7  11^th , 2010

*Abstracts are welcome for a panel on /The Silent Figure in Film, Literature and Culture/*

*/ /*

Silence fascinates and, in the Foucauldian sense, produces and amplifies other voices, interests and investments. Silence is a foil for cultural anxieties. This panel will focus on close textual readings of the silent/mute figure and the effects of that silence on other characters in the larger narrative. Examples could be from, among others, films such as /The Piano, Sweet and Lowdown, Johnny Belinda; /books such as /The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Seal Wife/; or cultural icons like ?Deep Throat.? These are just examples of the sort of focus I am looking for. Others are most welcome.

Deadline: September 30^th , 2009
