For the Workshop of the DGPuK Division 
Communication and Media Ethics and the  Media Ethics Network 2007

EUROPEAN MEDIA ETHICS

The concept of media ethics on the national level 
has become obsolete, due to the globalisation of 
the media world. Although determinably strong 
cultural bonds affect the media, journalistic 
practices and its encompassing norms or ethics, 
there is also the indisputable tendency within 
the globalised world market to conform to the 
existing ethical norms and values, thus 
standardising them. What is the relationship 
between cultural peculiarities and the 
international conventionality of media ethics in Europe?
This is the focal question which will be at the 
core of the 2007 conference of the DGPuK division 
Communication and Media Ethics and the Media 
Ethics Network.  To what extent can one refer to 
separate media Ethics? Are there distinctive 
progressive concordances which could possibly 
lend credence to a European media ethics? Can 
this actually be attained? What are the forces hindering this goal?
These pivotal questions are the basis of the 
political, economic and legal structures of the 
media in most European countries (predominantly 
those countries within the European Union) which should be thrashed out.
Studies within the realm of the specific 
countries involved are required to bring the 
following aspects to the podium: the intrinsic 
structures and problems, the justifications and 
envisaged problems, as well as debates pertaining 
to media ethics within that country.
The relevant themes from the European perspective 
should encapsulate the following aspects:

·       history and foundation of media ethics
·       cultural and economic context
·       professional ethics
·       institutional ethics
·       spectators' ethics
·       selfregulation and media accountability systems
·       media ethics within professional education and training
·       relevant practical cases for media ethics

The papers which should be presented in the form 
of extended abstracts, should include a 
bibliography of the essential literature and a 
short curriculum vitae, and be 3 - 4 pages long. 
The papers are required to be forwarded in 
electronic form to both addresses of the 
divisions' representatives by the 15th November 2006:

The papers for the DGPuK conference will be 
chosen with respect to the following criteria:
1. Relation to the theme of the conference
2. Theoretical justifications
3. Relevance of the findings
4. Compatibility of the utilised method
5. Clarity and accuracy of the presentation.
The Papers from the Conference are intended to be published.
