CALL FOR PAPERS, 2004 SCMS CONFERENCE
The Society for Cinema and Media Studies announces its Call for Proposals
for the 2004 Conference, March 4-7, in Atlanta, Georgia (Omni Hotel at CNN
Center, 100 Marquette CNN Center, Atlanta, Georgia, 30303).
PLENARY: Mediating Tomorrow's History: Live Coverage and Documentary in the
Digital Era.
The 2004 Society for Cinema and Media Studies annual conference will be
held in Atlanta, a city known for its broadcasting (CNN Headquarters), arts
(High Museum of Art, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center), and scholarship
(Emory University, Georgia State University, Morehouse
College). Additionally, Atlanta has long been a center for African
American culture and scholarship, and the city is home to the Atlanta
University Center, a consortium of the nation's most prestigious
Historically Black Colleges (Atlanta University; Clark, Morehouse, Morris
Brown and Spelman Colleges; and the Interdenominational Theological
Center). In recognition of these local cultural forces and recent global
developments, the SCMS 2004 plenary will explore the topic, Mediating
Tomorrow's History: Live Coverage and Documentary in the Digital Era.
Questions circulating around this issue include: What is the status of
documentary in the digital age? What forms can documentary or live
coverage take with digital technologies? What are the political and
theoretical possibilities open to historians when history is immediate
and/or mediated through new technologies? How are events affected by the
immediacy of live broadcasts? How might digital technologies open up
documentary and other representational channels to marginalized media
makers? What is the status of filmmaking in this environment?
We look forward to panel and workshop proposals addressing issues raised by
the plenary-and by our Atlanta location-as well as those that engage a wide
range of research in film and media studies.
We encourage student members to apply for the SCMS Travel Fund for Minority
Students. Travel funds are available to graduate students who plan to
attend the conference. You do not have to present a paper at the
conference to apply for travel funding. Please see the enclosed
announcement for more details.
