The Journalism Program of the School of Communication and Information, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (Honolulu, Hawai’i) invites applicants for the position of Associate/Full Professor.  This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure track position to begin August 1, 2024, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

*The Opportunity:*

**

The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa invites applications for this position to play a significant role in building our rapidly growing Journalism major. Our program is nimble, inclusive, and highly dynamic. We are seeking a colleague with demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The ideal candidate for this position is a specialist in emerging media, with expertise in how advancements in Artificial Intelligence(s) will reshape the field. This person will help our students prepare for an industry that will increasingly leverage computational resources to spread news and battle misinformation and disinformation. In that vein, news literacy is an important emphasis of our program, and we are seeking someone who can contribute significantly to that cause, in an effort to make such literacy part of the core curriculum university-wide. While AI is a novel and monumental challenge, with exciting opportunities and frightening potential, we also see intersections inherent with emerging media technologies of all types, including social media, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Extended Reality (XR) and Mixed Reality (MR), as well as with digital storytelling platforms such as ArcGIS.

This position is specifically created to meet these demands from a content-production perspective, while positioning the faculty member immediately into a university-wide leadership position but also into a leadership role nationally and internationally. We are seeking a senior faculty member who not only can do this type of work but has done it, and can provide evidence of a research-agenda trajectory on the way up, evidence of grant-seeking successes, and of a clear rationale for joining the faculty in Hawai’i, as opposed to any other place.

*Duties and Responsibilities - Associate Professor (I-4):*

 1. Conduct impactful research aligned with the standards at the
    University;
 2. Teach classes both at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
 3. Advise and mentor students;
 4. Engage in the academic community through providing service to the
    Program, School, College, University, to the discipline of Journalism;
 5. Serve as program/department chair when selected;
 6. Lead programmatic/departmental committees aimed at improving our
    program, our school, and Journalism in the state;
 7. Other duties as assigned by the School Chair.

**

*Duties and Responsibilities - Professor (I-5):*

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank,

 1. Assume a role of professional leadership at the university level and
    in the scholarly discipline;

*Minimum Qualifications - Associate Professor (I-4):*

 1. Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, or a closely related field, or a
    terminal degree in a Journalism-adjacent field;

 2. Proven record of impactful publishing in scholarly contexts;

 3. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching
    at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of
    increasing professional maturity;
 4. Evidence of proficiency in teaching courses at the university level
    in emerging media, social media, and/or about other types of
    innovative approaches to Journalism;
 5. Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic
    affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an
    appropriate professional society or organization, or in other
    appropriate job-related service activities;
 6. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities,
    including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate;
 7. Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues;
 8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with
    students, faculty, staff and/or administration.

*Minimum Qualifications - Professor (I-5):*

 1. Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, or a closely related field, or a
    terminal degree in a Journalism-adjacent field;
 2. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching
    at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of
    increasing professional maturity;
 3. Evidence of excellence in teaching courses at the university level
    in emerging media, social media, and/or about other types of
    innovative approaches to Journalism;
 4. research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition
    by the national or international community of scholars active in the
    same field;
 5. Demonstrated continuing participation in the scholarly and academic
    affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an
    appropriate professional society or organization, or in other
    appropriate job-related service activities;
 6. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities,
    including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate;
 7. Ability to undertake a variety of assignments within the University;
 8. Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the department and scholarly
    discipline;
 9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with
    students, faculty, staff and/or administration.
