Symposium: Moving the Periphery – Critical interdisciplinary Approaches 
to a changing Europe

This symposium addresses the complex shifting processes resulting from 
the increased visibility of populist movements across Europe. We observe 
a change in the kind of discussions that are permissible in public 
debates as well as a stark polarisation of opinions. Contributors will 
examine a range of issues such as the politicisation of Islam, the 
relation between populism and agency, the role of media literacy in 
relation to populist movements, and the fear of the loss of national 
identity and values.

After the Brexit referendum in 2016, postgraduate researchers at the 
King’s College London Modern Languages departments set up the workshop 
series ‘Facing the Future’ to discuss the nationalistic and 
authoritarian tendencies that have gained strength in the past years. 
Born from this initiative, Joint-PhD researchers from the German 
Department at King's College London and the Humboldt University of 
Berlin have convened an inter-institutional undergraduate module on 
populism in a changing Europe using an approach to teaching that is 
explicitly research-focused. Starting with the question “What is 
populism?”, the participating undergraduate researchers have spent the 
last semester designing their own research projects, conducting 
interviews and producing presentation formats to share their findings in 
this one-day symposium at King’s College London.
