Live opera simulcasts to movie theatres (‘opera cinema’) have exploded 
in popularity. At present, the Royal Opera House relays productions to 
1,500 sites in 35 territories, catering to a global audience of over a 
million opera fans. For the first time in history, more people watch the 
Royal Opera on the screen than the stage.

Opera cinema is more than a vehicle for virtually extending opera 
audiences: it is a hybrid cultural experience that combines an 
established art form with advanced digital media technologies to unique 
effect. It has a distinctive audience, fosters special forms of 
etiquette (that are atypical for the movies) and provides special 
artistic and commercial opportunities for the arts sector.

This symposium is the first of its kind to focus exclusively on opera 
cinema, and invites a variety of speakers from the academic and arts 
world to offer a range of perspectives on this fascinating case study. 
Panel discussions will address the creative potential of opera 
simulcasts as a distinctive art form, the unique audience experience 
facilitated by these events, the character of existing opera cinema 
audiences, and the capacity for digital technologies to develop new 
audiences for the arts.
