[ecrea] Vacancy at University of Salzburg - Professor of Audience Studies
Wed May 10 19:30:43 GMT 2017
Full Professor of Audience Studies, Department of Communication,
Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg
The university wishes to appoint a full professor of audience studies
with a specialisation in content and usage research in the Department of
Communication commencing at the earliest October 1st, 2018. The closing
date for applications is 31.05.2017.
At the Department of Communication, audience research is understood as
an integrative field of research, comprising the content of media, the
uses of communication as well as the appropriation and sense-making of a
variety of communication content and platforms by individuals and groups
in their everyday life. Audience studies at the department are anchored
in the tradition of an inclusive perspective incorporating content,
production contexts, media reception and in particular media
appropriation. Right now, active participation and new forms of usage in
the context of online communication are particularly challenging, and
therefore of special interest for the position. Audience research with a
special focus on content, usage and appropriation, pays attention to a
variety of phenomena as digitalization and media convergence as ongoing
processes driven by technical innovations, affecting culture and
society. Such dynamics blur the former boundaries between different
media and lead to their integration in everyday life.
To the future professor of audience studies, such timely processes will
be central in her/his research. The successful applicant will pay
special attention to the contemporary creative and participatory
practices in new media environments in her/his theoretical as well as
empirical research endeavours. A holistic perspective on media content
and media driven communication practices overcomes the boundaries
between reception and audience studies and integrates these with content
focussed approaches.
At the communication department of the University of Salzburg, audience
studies, focussing on content and usage research, has a distinct
tradition of social engagement. It centres on the subjective meanings
attributed to media by individuals and groups in their everyday
practices in the context of socialisation processes. Such an integrative
approach requires a strong inter- and transdisciplinary perspective.
The successful candidate’s area of expertise will include a strong
record in research using both quantitative and qualitative methods of
empirical research (multi-level analyses and combined method designs). A
profound knowledge of Austrian and European media landscapes is desirable.
Preconditions for Employemt:
1. A PhD or comparable doctorate in media and communication;
