for the 1st International Conference on “Europe in Discourse: Identity,
Diversity, Borders”

Athens, 23-25 September 2016

*CALL for PAPERS*

Papers are invited for the 1st International Conference on Europe in
Discourse: Identity, Diversity, Borders
<http://www.europeindiscourse.eu/>, which will take place in Athens,
Greece, September 23rd through 25th 2016.

The conference is a unique opportunity to bring together different
perspectives and methodologies involved in shaping the complexities and
contradictions of current European identity discourses. A fundamental
methodological pluralism is considered a key condition for addressing
these complexities and contradictions at a time of crisis.

The conference aims to bring together researchers interested in
analyzing European identities in various discourses. Researchers from
many different disciplines will investigate historical, geopolitical,
geo-cultural, geo-economic and social perspectives on Europe.The
conference also invites contributions that explore the role of diversity
and borders in forging and re-shaping European identities.


    Conference Themes

Scholars are invited to submit papers that draw on discourse theories,
linguistic or textual analysis to investigate topics that include:

·Historical, geo-cultural, geo-economic and geopolitical aspects of
European identities

·Europe: super-diverse and globalized

·Images of crisis and recovery in Europe

·Conceptual blending, discourse and metaphors about Europe

·Translation and linguistic (in)equality in Europe

·Refugees and asylum seekers in EU discourses

·European diversity through religion and culture

·Discourses on the European economic crisis

·Discursive constructions of borders

·Political discourse in the European Union

·Media constructions of European identities

·Ethnographic approaches to European identity-making

·Construction of European narratives

·Extreme right populist discourses in EU

·Discourses of integration/assimilation in the EU


      Presentation Formats and Abstracts

Proposals for participation in the 1st International Conference on
Europe in Discourse: Identity, Diversity, Borders can be submitted in
the following formats:


        Oral Communications

Oral communications, which consist of a 20-minute presentation followed
by a 10-minute discussion, will be submitted in response to the general
theme(s) of the conference mentioned below. Abstracts for oral
communications should be no longer than 500 words and list five keywords.

Deadline for oral communications: *November 30^th 2015*


        Posters

Posters can form a scientific contribution related to methodologies and
or topics of the Conference and is better presented graphically. A
poster should be prepared as in A1 or A0 format.

The authors should prepare their proposal that includes: title, names,
affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) a mini abstract (up
to 100 words), and 2-3 keywords; All poster proposals are subject to
peer-review.

At least one co-author/presenter of the Poster must be registered for
the conference.

Deadline for oral communications: *November 30^th 2015*


        Themed Panels

Proposals for panels must be submitted /*online*/ as a single document,
single-spaced in 12-point type. Panel proposals should include a brief
overview of the theme, a title of the panel, and 4 to 5 abstract of
papers, each to be delivered within 30 minutes (a 20-minute presentation
followed by a 10-minute period for questions).

The names of the panel presenters should be omitted from the document to
enable double-blind review. However, panel organizers should include
their name.

Acceptance notifications will be sent to panel organizers.

Deadline for panel submissions: *December 18^th 2015*


    Evaluation Process, Criteria and Notification

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed and ranked by the Conference
Scientific Committee. Abstracts will be assessed using the following
criteria.

*Scientific strength. *Contributions should:

·offer significant contributions to the development of the discipline
and point to future research agendas; and

·present innovative or interdisciplinary approaches, including novel
collaborations or syntheses across sub-disciplines or with other related
disciplines.

*Integration:*/**/Proposals /may/ receive higher priority if they are
clearly linked to the conference overall theme and are solidly grounded
in discourse or textual analysis. All proposals will be evaluated by the
Scientific Committee.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by *December 15th 2015*


    Other Policies


      *One-Presentation Rule*

Proponents are entitled to submit only one abstract as a first author.
Speakers agreeing to present papers in panels also follow the
one-presentation rule, i.e. someone who is first author or presenter
cannot also be first author or presenter for another paper. The
one-paper rule does not apply to plenaries.


      *Presentations in absentia *

If presenters are unable to come to present their paper on the day of
conference, they are encouraged to send a paper along with a narrated
Powerpoint file and present in absentia. Papers on the conference theme
presented in absentia are eligible to be included in Conference
Materials and Proceedings.
