Media, Event and Social Theory: Transnational Challenges for Analysis
Workshop

School of Communication, Media and Theatre at the University of Tampere, Finland will organize one day interdisciplinary workshop on the topic of Media, Event and Social Theory: Transnational Challenges for Analysis. The goal of the workshop is to investigate and examine new theoretical and conceptual frameworks as well as analytical tools to better capture the contemporary aspects of media-saturation of social life and related eventization beyond methodological nationalism. The conference invites scholars from different fields of social and cultural sciences (sociology, philosophy, anthropology, media studies, political science, cultural studies, gender studies, etc.) to discuss the complex interplay between media, event and social theory in the such frameworks as globalization, transnationalism, transculturalism and/or cosmopolitanism, for understanding the current post- national architecture of event-driven, media-saturated sociality.

Topics suitable for this workshop could include, but are not
limited to, the following:

-	Media or event theory?
-	Media-saturated sociality in global society
-	Post-Durkheimian reflections on collective (media) effervescence
-	Beyond spectacle – Debord 2.0.
-	Baudrillard and simulation of events
-	Ethics and politics of contemporary event theory
-	Cosmopolitan media events?
-	Disruption, conflict and media events
-	Media, event and history
-	Manufacturing media-driven events
-	Transnational/transcultural media events
-	Mediatization of event(s)
-	Media anthropology of public events

The workshop is organized by Tampere Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) research project Je suis Charlie – The symbolic battle and struggle over attention (2015-2017) co-directed by Research Director, Adjunct Professor Katja Valaskivi and Adjunct Professor Johanna Sumiala, University of Tampere, Finland. The project is funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation.
