Call for Papers: A book on Romance and Television

Title: Television and Romance – Studies, Observations and Interpretations

Under Contract with: Nova Science Publishers (Expected publication date – 2016)

Editor: Prof. Amir Hetsroni (Department of English, Culture and Communication – Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University).

This book, under contract with Nova Science Publishers, aims to analyze the complex interplay of television and romance. My plan is to include contributions from communication scholars, cultural analysts and social scientists whose writing will shed light on the content of romantic TV programming, note the effects of exposure to such content, describe the audience, and offer explanations as to the appeal of this material. Special attention will be paid to international perspectives and to culture-related aspects.

Quantitative as well as qualitative entries, research reviews and theoretical essays are all welcome. I want to provide the readers with a methodological mix and give voice to various approaches to the study of intimate relationships and romance as reflected on the home screen - from content analysis to discourse analysis; from in-depth interviews to controlled experiments; from ethnographic observations to representative-sample surveys.

A previous call for papers was published and few articles were already accepted, but now as the publisher wishes to extend the scope of the book – it is an opportunity to those who do research in the area and its vicinity to offer their insights. Feasible topics include, but are not limited to (please feel free to suggest additional themes):

· The tenets of romance on television

· Distinguishing the romantic from the erotic and the erotic from the pornographic

· The reflection of various stages of intimate relationship on the screen (courtship, breakup, etc.).

· Long term (e.g. cultivation) and short term (e.g. arousal) effects of exposure to romantic programming.

· Motivations for watching romantic programming (e.g. uses and gratifications)

· Para-social relationships with romantic protagonists and transportation with romantic narrative.

· Comparative content analysis of romantic shows.

· Textual analysis of specific programs.

· Reception studies of romantic TV.

· The representation of deviant and alternative romance on the home screen (e.g. threesome).

· Discourse analysis of viewers communities centered around romantic programs.

· Cross-platform examination of romance (television vs. other media).

As editor I am open to any theoretical or methodological approach, but the book is an academic volume – not a collection of journalistic reviews or ideological polemic.

The deadline for submission of chapter proposals – consisting of extended abstracts, four-to-five pages long, is: July 1st, 2015.

The abstract should include a purpose statement for the proposed paper, research questions and hypotheses (where applicable), theoretical frame, method(s) of analysis, expected results (for empirical studies) or insights (for qualitative projects), scholarly contribution and public appeal reference (if relevant).

Notification of accepted proposals and invitations to submit complete papers (4,500 to 11,000 words, APA style) will be made on or before August 1st , 2015.

The complete papers’ due date is November 1st, 2015.

The book will go to print in early 2016. No publication fee would be required.
