CALL FOR PAPERS

Modern Persuasion, Ideological Emptiness – Threats to Political Marketing?

3-5 September 2015, Prague, Czech Republic
Venue: Faculty of Social Science, Charles University, Hollar Smetanovo
nábřeží 6, Prague 1.
Co-Chairs: Anna Matuskova and Denisa Hejlova

Organizing Committee
Professor Bruce Newman – DePaul University, Chicago, USA
Professor Paul Baines – Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, UK
Professor Phil Harris – University of Chester, Chester, UK
Dr Ian Richardson – Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden

We would like to invite you to the forthcoming international conference
on political marketing, which will focus on current political changes
and issues surrounding campaigning, elections, grassroots lobbying,
political parties, terrorist groups, public diplomacy initiatives and
the political marketing process more widely. The growth of contemporary
populist parties, their (lack of) ideology, decreasing political
participation, and the (over)simplification of policy issues are all
changing the political process as we know it.

We therefore invite academics, practitioners and political advisers to
participate in this conference to discuss where political marketing is
going and where it ought to be going. Our goal is to better understand
the nature of successful political marketing campaigns, through
governments, parties, terrorist groups, and movements, to analyse what
is the role of political marketing and its tools and techniques. The
conference will also consider the increasing shift to populism in
politics in individual countries, and examine the connection between
political marketing, management and the resultant electoral outcomes. At
the same time, we seek to explore the rise of extremist parties and
other third party groups, the issues they communicate, and the role of
persuasion more generally in political communication. Papers are
therefore requested in the following topic areas:

·Current issues in Electoral Campaigning (ideological vs. issues vs.
values approaches)
·New approaches to campaign strategy (new possibilities, new techniques
and tools, new target audiences, new parties and movements, new channels
etc.]
·Entrepreneurship in political marketing and communication
·Modern persuasion techniques and their application in political
marketing (e.g. by Islamist groups, by movements, propaganda rhetoric
within electoral campaigns)
·Political marketing and performance (particularly as explored through
election case studies)
·Government communication and the marketization of politics
Confirmed Keynote Speakers include:
Professor Bruce Newman (De Paul University, USA) on “Reforming Political
Marketing Scholarship and Practice”
Professor Paul Baines (Cranfield University, UK) on “Evolutionary change
and the marketing of terrorist groups”
