*/// Algorithmic Iconography ///*
Iconography is a long-standing art historical approach that offers a
rich basis for the analysis of images beyond the field of Art, including
images on social media. Iconography traditionally has involved two key
areas. The first entails the close interpretation of individual works of
Art in terms of their cultural context and place within representational
traditions. The second involves the mapping of iconic motifs across time
and space, tracking the movement of images from one context to another,
and their appropriation, adaption, and reuse. Both of these approaches
offer fertile possibilities for the qualitative analysis of social media
images. Recent developments in Computer Vision and pattern recognition
algorithms also offer an exciting and timely opportunity to explore
possible synergies between qualitative iconographical analysis and
computational techniques for the analysis of large online image datasets.
