Conference Organized by the Faculty of Communication, Ankara University
Date: 22-23 October 2015
Venue: Ankara University
Keynote Speaker: Professor Juan Cole, University of Michigan
Founded in 1965 as the first faculty of communication in Turkey and well
known with its unconventional and progressive academic tradition , this
year Faculty of Communication of Ankara University celebrates its 50th
anniversary. In the honor of its anniversary, Faculty of Communication
is organizing a two days international conference. The focus of the
conference “Constructing” Middle East: Media, Ideology and Culture will
be media in the making of social struggles and power configurations in
the Middle East. Particularly with the impetus of unfolding events such
as Gezi Protests, “Arab Spring”, Palestine and Israeli conflict, and
civil war in Syria, the Middle East has become a region that almost
everyone "knows" and is felt obliged to know something about. On the one
hand, global media has played a central role in the construction of
stereotypical and essentialist representations of the Middle East.
Accordingly, the region and its publics are represented as culturally
defined by Islam, strongly anti-Western, and susceptible to
authoritarianism as well as terrorism. On the other hand, media
technologies have been utilized by the masses to influence and sometimes
change the course of events in this one of the most dynamic regions of
the world. Therefore this conference approaches media as sites of social
and political struggles from a historical perspective. This conference
also seeks to discuss those issues where mainstream media deliberately
avoid to cover, diminish their significance or remain silent. We welcome
papers from scholars and media practitioners that engage critically with
the issues that may include, but are not limited to:
Power Relations, Social Conflicts and Media
Gender and media in Middle East
Media and the Coverage of “Terrorism”
Representation of Islam in Conventional and New Media
Islamism and Islamist Media
Freedom of Expression and (Self)Censorship in Middle East
