Registration is still open for the XIII Magis International Film Studies Spring School


The MAGIS Spring School is an International Film Studies Spring School dedicated to MA students, PhD students, and young researchers. The MAGIS, founded in 2003, provides high standard interdisciplinary seminars and workshops on topics such as cinema and visual arts, post-cinema, porn studies, and film heritage.



The XIII MAGIS Spring School will be held in Gorizia (Italy) from March 20 to 24, 2015.


Here are some highlights on the School's programme:


Cinema & Contemporary Visual Art

The Section aims to encourage the discussion on the intertextual and intermedial relations between moving images and contemporary visual arts, through the voice of scholars, artists, and curators.



Guests: Albert Serra (filmmaker) and Christa Sommerer (artist and curator)



Guided tour of the exhibition: “Interface Cultures” (Villa Manin, Codroipo, UD – March 20-April 19)



Post-cinema: The Border Within II – The Body, the Power, the Media

The section aims at investigating the contemporary developments of the (human) body in the realm of new media, analysing its status in videogames, transmedia platforms, social networks, and all the various other Internet features.



Guests: BE ANOTHER LAB (artists collective), Antoine Viviani (filmmaker and producer), Stuart Allen (Cardiff University)

Roundtable about “immersive environments”



Porn Studies: Cartography of the Pornographic Audiovisual

The section investigates the relationships between sex, commerce, media, and technology. It has a specific focus on the histories and geographies of pornographic representations, on the migration of forms among different cultural contexts, on the shifting ethics and aesthetics of sexual representations.



Guests: Feona Attwood (Middlesex University – editor of Porn Studies), Paolo Caneppele (Österreichisches Filmmuseum), Oliver Carter (Birmingham City University), Lynn Comella (University of Nevada Las Vegas), Kevin Heffernan (Southern Methodist University), Rosanna Maule (Concordia University), John Mercer (BCU), Ronald Simons (EYE Film Institute Netherlands), Clarissa Smith (University of Sunderland – editor of Porn Studies), Renato Stella (University of Padova), Frédéric Tachou (filmmaker and author)



Workshops on: ethics in Web 2.0 porn, vintage porn, contemporary US porn



Evening screening with rare silent pornographic films (in collaboration with EYE)



Film Heritage: Voice/Speech/Word – Dubbing and Subtitling in Comparative Contexts

The section is organized by University of Udine – La Camera Ottica Film and Video Restoration, CineGraph Hamburg, University of Applied Sciences Potsdam & University of Potsdam (European Media Studies). In recent years, issues concerning dubbing and subtitling have reached a great scholarly interest mainly as a consequence of the extraordinary changes the digital caused to film experience. The section is entirely dedicated to the issues of dubbing and subtitling from a strongly transnational and comparative perspective.



Guests: Mark Betz (King’s College, London – To be confirmed), Anna Sofia Rossholm (Linnaeus University), Anna Kirchhartz (Independent scholar), Carla Mereu (University of Reading), Francesco Bono (University of Perugia)



Special Guest Dusan Hanak (director, one of the most influential figures of the Slovak Nová Vlna)





The XIII MAGIS Spring School will be held in Gorizia (Italy) from March 20 to 24, 2015.

The fee is 100 euros to be paid in cash at the registration desk or via bank transfer.

The fee includes: the official School’s publications (books and journals); admission to all the morning plenary sections, afternoon workshops, evening screenings; two aperitifs at the events opening and closing the School; an accommodation service that will help you find your room in Gorizia and find the best travel solutions.
