25 Years After: The Challenges of Building the Post-Communist Media and 
Communication Industries



20-22 November 2014, Prague Campus of New York University





The 25 Years After conference will address the transition of the media 
and communication industries in the post-communist countries of Europe 
and Eurasia since 1989. The conference will take place in Prague on the 
occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution and the 
sweeping changes that took place throughout the region after the fall of 
the Berlin Wall.



The aim of the conference is not only to critically examine the media 
transformation processes, issues, obstacles and nuances, but also to 
bring together scholars, media and communications practitioners, and 
representatives of NGOs working in the region and engage them in joint 
discussions on the topics mentioned below.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

The conference will be preceded by a special workshop organized by the 
LSE Media Policy Project (MPP), which is aimed at encouraging engagement 
in policy making on audiovisual media in Europe at 16:30 – 18:30 on 20 
November, 2014. The workshop is open to students, academics, and 
representatives of press councils, journalist associations, NGOs, etc. 
upon registration at (cerna /at/ keynote.cz).



The aim of the workshop is to encourage scholars to engage with upcoming 
EU policy processes and decision-making related to the audiovisual media 
sector. With the upcoming Regulatory Fitness review (REFIT) of the 
Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), and recent momentum around 
regulatory independence and media ownership and pluralism, there is a 
need for evidence and ideas from media systems not usually represented 
in these policy debates that are too often dominated by the interests of 
the Union’s largest countries and transnational companies. Discussion 
will focus on:



·         Current key policy issues in EU media policy-making

·         The priorities and needs for evidence and how your research 
might contribute

·         How you can get involved in EU-level policy debates and help 
set the agenda of the new Commission.
