The Communication Studies Program in the School of Journalism and
Communication at Carleton University invites applications from qualified
candidates for a preliminary (tenure-track) position in Communication
Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2014.
This is an open position in terms of its defined area(s) of communication
scholarship and expertise; however, candidates should articulate how their
research contributes to the central intellectual debates of the field broadly
and in their own area(s) of specialization in particular, and how they will
augment existing areas of faculty research strength. The candidate will be
expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and
supervision, share in the administrative duties of the department, and
implement a research program that will lead to scholarly publications, and
which has the potential to attract external funding, graduate students and
postdoctoral researchers.

The Communication Studies Program is an engaged intellectual community
comprising more than 1,000 undergraduate students, and more than 50
master’s and PhD candidates. Many of our faculty members are leaders in
their respective areas of research and are often called upon by major news
media, policy makers, think tanks and other institutions and organizations
to contribute their knowledge and expertise to civic discourse and policy
development and debate.

Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Communication or a cognate
discipline (highly qualified ABD candidates will be considered), evidence of
an emerging research program, and demonstrate a commitment to
teaching excellence. The Communication Studies program is keen to
identify a scholar whose research promotes the importance of a dynamic
civic culture. This will be a candidate who, through innovation in teaching
and pedagogy, encourages creative and critical inquiry and empowers
students to become active citizens in their communities (local, national and
global), and who can help to advance Carleton University’s profile as a
global leader in public affairs through their community engagement efforts,
research collaborations, and/or public communication activities.
All applications must be submitted electronically. Hard copy applications
will not be processed. Candidates should prepare a dossier that includes
the following: a signed cover letter; current curriculum vitae; 3 sample
