 I wanted to draw your attention to a post we are currently advertising at the ICS in Leeds. If you have any post doc students who have recently completed and are interested in the area of digital transformations of community and culture, please let them know about this position. It is a great opportunity for post doc students - a three year position at a research fellow level, with networking and research possibilities. We would expect the research fellow to pursue their own research within the broad remit of the project, and contribute to the research environment of the department, but s/he would also be able to dip in and out of the many other activities going on in the Network+ (pilot projects, networks, placements, workshops). Postgraduate Research Fellow in the Digital Transformations of Community and Culture

Fixed term from 1 June 2012 to 31 May 2015

This EPSRC funded project investigating Digital Transformations of Community and Culture  which is led by Dr Helen Thornham, aims to undertake a range of activities including networks, placements, scoping studies, pilots and workshop events.

You will support research activities led by Dr Thornham at Leeds and engage in the wider research of the Network+. You will be expected to conduct your own research within the broad theme of digital transformations of community and culture, participate in the research culture at the Institute of Communications Studies, and engage in the activities within the project including impact assessments. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with academic interests in this broad area. The post offers direct engagement in high quality, international research and networks within the UK and Europe.

You will:
*      Manage the virtual resources for the project
*      Manage research activities including fieldwork and analysis (interviews, focus groups, questionnaires)
*      Engage in the wider research activities and environment of the Project as a whole
*      Plan and manage your own research within the theme of digital transformation of community and culture
*      Contribute to the preparation and dissemination of reports, papers and publications

You will have a PhD related to the research project (i.e. new media, sociology, cultural studies, communication, digital humanities), be digitally literate, have excellent written and communication skills, excellent organisation skills and be able to demonstrate a developing record of research.

University Grade 7 (£30,122 - £35,938 p.a.) It is likely that an appointment will be made at or below £33,884 since there are funding limitations which dictate the level at which the appointment can start

Job Description

Reports to: Dr Helen Thornham

Responsible to: Head of Institute

Main Duties and Responsibilities

*     Responsibility for providing research support including the following:
o  Undertaking fieldwork and analysis for scoping studies and impact assessments
o  Representing Investigators at various activities within the project
o  Providing intellectual cohesion and support across the Network+
o  Drafting and distributing reports, papers and publications
·       Use creativity to analyse and interpret the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, including coding and software use

*       Analyse and interpret key documents

*       Support workshops and events, sourcing transcription, delivering files and obtaining updates on progress as necessary

*       Prepare and organise data sets, including the website and other visual material

*       Lead literature searches and the preparation of reports and papers, contributing to research publications

*       Develop and use new research techniques and methods as appropriate

·     Communicate ideas and results clearly to a range of people within and outside the team. Liaising with Co-Is and other networks throughout the project

·      Interacting with, and providing assistance to, other staff in the research group.
*      Plan and manage your own research activity within the strategy identified for the project as a whole
*      Interact and collaborate with other staff in the research group
*      Develop collaborations with colleagues at the University of Leeds and with external organisations/other Institutions to develop new external research links.
*      Balance the competing pressures of research and administrative demands and deadlines.
*      Ensure satisfactory compliance in your work with respect to safety etc
·       To undertake any other duties commensurate within the role and grade as and when required.

Essential


 *   You will have a PhD related to the research project (i.e. new media, sociology, cultural studies, communication, digital humanities)
 *   Experience in qualitative/quantitative research methods and an interest in exploring new methods
 *   Digital literacy

*     A research background in a related subject
