For its sixth edition sound:frame is dealing with necessary 
«substructions» which are needed for a festival to be able to take 
place. Topics such as cultural economy, positioning in an artistic 
context as well as sustainability are being dealt with and discussed 
with experts at round tables prior to the festival. The artists will be 
provided with a technical base framework to work with. In contrast to 
the fixed technical features they are on the other hand left with 
complete freedom content wise.

/In archaeology, substruction is a term for the structures that support 
buildings and terraces, just like pillars carrying vaults in antique 
architecture. Whether it is a festival, an institution or an artistic 
piece of work, each project requires substructions and pillars to 
support them. Rarely however do these substructures become visible to 
the outsider, many even make an effort to hide them well. The observer 
only sees the superficial whole, a shiny and stable dome, a 
representative building, that would collapse without the supporting 
architecture. With this year‘s festival focus «substructions», 
sound:frame focuses on the hidden frame- works. We‘ll try to shed light 
on the development and the tasks that are involved when realizing a 
festival: Why does the exhibition look the way it does? How does 
software come into play when implementing multimedia art? Which 
technologies are used? What is the un- derlying concept beneath the 
program of different events? What are the conditions that are to be met 
in order to be able to realize a concept? /

A cooperation between sound:frame and MAk – Austrian Museum of Applied 
Arts / contemporary Art

With the audiovisual exhibition at the MAK, sound:frame returns to a 
setting at a museum. Gerald Moser, who is responsible for the concept of 
this year‘s exhibition architecture, took up the concept to build 
scaffolding out of an elaborate trussing sculpture that will support the 
projection surface and the sound system. For the artists, there‘s a 
fixed system with which they can do whatever they want. There‘s no need 
for them to care about the technical basis of their work, therefore they 
can fully concentrate on content. Different approaches will be shown 
consecutively, they will work with the construction in different, 
personal ways. Focusing on one work at a time, the respective artworks 
are able to fully extend both spatially and temporally.

Robert Henke aka. Monolake is a composer, sound designer, software 
developer (Ableton LIVE), installation artist and teaches sound research 
and computer music. As an accomplis- hed artist and musician, Henke 
works with various artists from other areas, for example Christopher 
Bauder with whom he created ATOM. Dutch visualist and software developer 
Tarik Barri joins Henke to realize audiovisual performances and 
installations. Tarik Barri does research on three dimensional, 
interactive technologies and has received widespread acclaim for 
creating software for visualization.

Hailing from Canada, Herman Kolgen is known for his interdisciplinary 
works - „a true au- diokinetic sculpturer.“ At the intersections of 
different media (music, video, film, installati- on), Kolgen searches 
for new ways of expression and technological languages.

Born in Austria, Berlin based Rainer Kohlberger is a visual artist and 
designer. Kohlberger produces distinctive, interactive, artistic 
audiovisual applications and installations by wor- king with unique 
generative designs.

Thanks to their precision, innovation and contentual as well as 
aesthetic expression, depart are among the most significant audiovisual 
artists in Austria. Gregor Ladenhauf (audio) and Leonhard Lass (video) 
complement each other in inspiring ways to create multimedia art at its 
finest.

The two German artists Jan Jelinek and Karl Kliem have been working 
together on audiovisual performances and installations for several years 
now. Jan Jelinek focuses on the transformation of sound, where he 
converts, reduces and changes pop music into abstract sound collages. 
His colleague Karl Kliem, owner of the Label “Dienststelle” creates 
visuals and installations for bands playing electronic music.

The three main topics which have been discussed prior to the festival 
will once again be dealt with in the course of the sound:frame departure 
conference 2012. The outcome will then be presented at the 
«substructions» exhibition. Invited experts will present their approach 
on the different topics, especially keeping in mind the importance of 
sound:frame as an international representative for the audiovisual 
community.

- Music program and Live Visuals

Naturally the festival will also include a broad audiovisual live 
program. In the selected Viennese locations the focus will as usual lie 
on the visualization, especially on mapping installations. Just like in 
previous years it is the goal to break away from familiar screen formats 
and experiment with new surfaces. Next to our AV acts sound:frame 
emphasizes on the communication between visual artists and musicians, as 
for example between kon.txt and Svetlana Industries.

We are happy to welcome the London based Boiler Room crew at the 
sound:frame festival for the first time in Vienna. Within only a year 
Boiler Room positioned itself to be one
of the most important online representatives for underground music. By 
now the average number of people watching their stream has reached 
unbelievable 1.2 million viewers. The line-up for Boiler Room Vienna 
will consist of local booking.

sound:frame‘s musical program tries to explore the most recent 
developments and genres by inviting both national and international 
musicians and producers who break the barriers and go their own way. At 
breakneck speed, new genres are invented. To me this develop- ment is 
most appropriately called „eclecticism,“ as very few artists only run in 
a single direc- tion. Styles and their names vary and succeed in 
combining all kinds of different influences with each other: hip hop, 
boombap, glitch hop, bass music, wonky, witch house, fantasy metal, 
future beats, broken beats, dubstep, grime, broken jazz, post dubstep, 
fidget house, nu jazz,... Whatever you may call it, the sound:frame 
program is an accurate depiction of recent trends. Additionally, it was 
important for me to create a dramaturgy for the different evenings and 
to attune the spots to create a harmonious flow. While it is very 
important to try to show different approaches and tendencies, the 
programs will be thought of as a whole.
