PANEL ABSTRACT:

In the history of social sciences the idea of circulation has
stimulated much discussion among thinkers such as Karl Marx
(1885/1974), Marcel Mauss (1924/1990), Claude Lévi-Strauss (1958),
Marshall Sahlins (1972, 1976) and Stuart Hall (1980) and their
followers. A common interest of these writers has been to examine
circulation as a cultural practice and/or system of exchange through
which individuals establish social bonds and/or cultural systems
through an exchange of people, goods, ideas and messages.

In recent years the discussion around circulation has moved towards
new contexts of research as the intensification of media-saturation
and media-related social, cultural, political and economic relations,
have gained new relevance in understanding contemporary mediated
society (cf. Lee& LiPuma 2002; Peterson 2004).

The session invites papers that look into power relations from the
perspective of circulation. The scope of the panel is
cross-disciplinary. We encourage papers from media scholars,
sociologists, anthropologists, and historians and other fields
interested in the issues of circulation and power.

Following themes on the relationship between circulation and power
could be addressed: (i) How is power present in circulation of
different cultural practices and related items, ideas and actors? (ii)
What kind of power relations take place through encounters between
different circulating actors, elements, organisms and institutions?
And (iii) How is power established, reinforced, negotiated or
questioned in these circulating encounters?

Individual papers on the roles of actors in circulating global trends
of governance and circulation of media images contributing in
establishing difference / coherence are especially welcomed.

Please note: The organizers of the panel plan a special issue on
‘Circulation’ to be published in the European Journal of Cultural
Studies

The European Journal of Cultural Studies is a major international,
peer-reviewed journal that promotes a broad-ranging conception of
cultural studies rooted in lived experience. The journal is an
interdisciplinary platform for charting new questions and new
research, publishing articles on topics including gendered identities,
cultural citizenship, migration, post-colonial criticism, consumer
cultures, media and film, and cultural policy.
