The 61th Annual Conference of the International Communication
Association
Communication @ the Center
Westin Waterfront Hotel, Boston
26-30 May 2011

Throughout the five-day conference, an estimated 2,200 scholars will
attend over 425 presentations representing the latest advances in the
field of communication.  The conference will be large, diverse, and high
in quality across the board. The conference theme, "Communication @ the
Center," received a tremendous response. The conference theme is
intended to highlight the centrality of communication scholarship and
contribute to the understanding and shaping the parameters of our
changing technological and academic environment. The opening plenary,
Thursday evening 26 May, will feature Craig Calhoun, president of the
Social Science Research Council and University Professor of the Social
Sciences at NYU, on the topic, "Communication as the Discipline of the
21st Century," followed by several eminent scholars representing a
variety of perspectives.  Once again, this year's conference will
highlight four special sessions in each plenary time slot.  Among those
will be panels by ICA Fellows featuring the work of recently selected
fellows.  The closing plenary on Monday, 30 May, will feature Noam
Chomsky addressing the media and the crisis of democracy.

An outstanding lineup of preconference workshops will address, a
Publishing Workshop presented by Wiley Blackwell, a Political
Communication Graduate Student Workshop, a  Doctoral Consortium by the
Organizational Communication Division, "Media, Child Health, and
Wellbeing: Setting the Research Agenda," "Strategic Communication - A
Concept at the Center of Applied Communications?," 'Placing the
Aesthetic in Popular Culture: Quality, Value, and Beauty in
Communication and Scholarship," "Post-Rorty Pragmatism: The New Wave of
Pragmatism in Communication Research," "The Future of Public Media:
Participatory Models, Global Networks," "Doctoral Consortium of the
Communication and Technology Division," "Seamlessly Mobile?: Mobile
Communication @ a Crossroads," "Mediating War and Technology," "What
Kind of Communication is @ the Center? -- An Investigation Into the
Impact of Public Relations vs Marketing," "Hierarchical Linear Modeling
(HLM)," and four professional development workshops.
