Tue Jan 18 21:17:12 GMT 2011

The critical analysis of musical discourse

Call for papers

The Critical Analysis of Musical Discourse will be a special issue of the academic journal Critical Discourse Studies, edited by Theo van Leeuwen, and expected to be published in November 2012

The journal would like to announce a call for papers analyzing music from a social critical point of view. In this context, ?musical discourse? refers to the musical expression and celebration of ideas and ?critical analysis of musical discourse? encourages authors to consider how music can be exploited in the interest of powerful institutions and ideologies or subvert such institutions and ideologies.

Papers are expected to include analysis of relevant musical works. Consideration of the way music combines with other semiotic modes in musical performances and other public events, and in films, television commercials, and so on, is strongly encouraged.

Themes could include but are not restricted to:

Political uses of music
Music and power
Music and (post)colonialism
Music and gender
Music in advertising and other forms of corporate communication
Subversive music

Proposals of no more than 500 words should be sent to Theo van Leeuwen at (theo.vanleeuwen /at/ uts.edu.au) by July 1st 2011

Proposals from research students are warmly welcomed.
