Brunel University
PhD Studentship
TOTeM: Tales of Things and Electronic Memory

£50,440 for three years, starting October 2009

An EPSRC studentship is available in the field of Digital Media, School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University. Research proposals are invited from applicants who have an interest in undertaking a practice-based PhD to examine the social implications of a new communication platform.

Project summary:
TOTeM is a £1.39 million, three-year project funded by the EPSRC to explore social memory in artefacts. The project consists of an academic consortium led by the Edinburgh College of Art, involving Brunel University, the University of Dundee, University College London, and the University of Salford. The central aim of the research project is to provide a platform to allow memories to be attached to objects that already exist in the world. The project identifies a significant gap in the emerging aspect of the digital economy known as the ?Internet of things', which is that as new objects are tagged there is a real danger that old ones will be left behind.

The TOTeM project is concerned with the memory and value of ?old' objects. For every owner, in almost every household, there will be a selection of objects that hold significant emotional resonance, and will already connect them to an Internet of memory and meaning. An intrinsic human trait is the process of imbuing meaning onto objects so that they provide connections to people, events and environments. Artefacts across a mantelpiece become conduits between events that happened in the past, to people who will occupy the future. These objects become essential coordinates across families and communities to support the telling of stories and the passing-on of knowledge.

The PhD research programme will consider the impact of the TOTeM social memory network in the contexts of communication, narrative, performance and authenticity.

Conditions:
Candidates must have a Master's (or equivalent) or a 1st class Bachelor's degree in the fields of Digital Media, Communication, Visual Anthropology, or a related discipline which concerns itself with the role of media in society and includes a strong practical media production component. Applications from qualified candidates in fields which concern themselves with narratives, such as Literature, Performance Studies, Archaeology and Modern History are also encouraged, provided that such candidates can demonstrate technical competence in at least two distinct areas of digital media production. For all candidates, a strong practical experience of audiovisual production and post-production, and/or of web design is particularly desirable.

Duration, start date:
The studentship is available from October 2009 for a period of three years.

The scholarship:
This PhD studentship is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The studentship covers tuition fees at the home student rate, and three-year maintenance expenses at a standard London rate. This studentship is open to overseas students, but it will not cover the difference between the tuition fees for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student.

How to Apply:
Please forward your letter of application and CV, along with a brief portfolio showcasing your digital media skills (on CD/DVD, accessible on a Mac and a PC) to Dr. Angelina Karpovich, School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University, Uxbridge, UB8 3PH, UK (email <mailto:(Angelina.Karpovich /at/ brunel.ac.uk)>(Angelina.Karpovich /at/ brunel.ac.uk)).
