Welcome to On the International Agenda, a newsletter from NORDICOM
providing an up-date on policy developments at the international level.

The No. 1, 2009 issue gives an overview of some main media events:

* As the agreement between ICANN and the American government expires on
30 September 2009, the EU Commissioner for Information Society recently
took the opportunity to propose a different Internet governance model.

* Lately, policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic have focused on the
potential misuse of personal data in the fight against terrorism and
illegal downloading, as well as in commercial practices such as the use
of "cookies" and behavioural advertising. Called into question is also
so-called deep packet inspection, a form of filtering used by network
operators.

* Judging from recent declarations by media-related international
organisations ICTs may well save the planet. Others, however, take a
more critical view.
