Fast Forward: access and preservation in a digital world

The Society of Archivists Annual Conference takes place in Bristol, UK
between 1st and 4th September 2009.

The conference programme and booking details are available at
http://www.archives.org.uk/content.asp?id=1670

This year's conference offers delegates the opportunity to discover, debate
and discuss issues surrounding archival preservation and access in a world
increasingly shaped by digital technology. Consisting of three strands, the
programme offers a varied line-up of sessions and events:

The Archives in the 21st Century strand will explore a broad range of issues
including leadership, workforce development, strategies, collection building
and ethical tensions.

The Digital Futures strand (devised by the Film, Sound & Photography Group,
one of the Society's Special Interest Groups) offers delegates the
opportunity to hear about exciting developments in community archives, oral
history, film and sound archiving and digital preservation. Digital Futures
will also include leading speakers from the world of Web 2.0; it will also
provide opportunities to hear from organisations that have contributed
content and enabled access to collections via Web 2.0 services like YouTube
and Flickr. Digital Futures will also explore issues surrounding
professional development in the increasingly technical sphere of
audio-visual archives.

The Conservation strand (devised by the Preservation & Conservation Group)
will encompass discussions, demonstrations and sessions about a whole range
of conservation and preservation issues.

Evening events include a Victorian lantern slideshow and a film screening by
the South-West Film & Television Archive, while the conference drinks
reception and gala dinner will be held at the Roman Baths and The Pump Room
in Bath.
