Social networking websites, such as Facebook and MySpace are very popular.
However, personal data can be harvested by these companies for commercial
use. Retention of personal data, such as photos and recorded IM chat, by
social network providers can be retained even after the user deletes the
application. Companies function under contract law in the state where the
server is located (Califormia in the case of Facebook) and are not governed
by UK or European law on data protection and privacy. Abhliash Nair
discusses privacy/data protection issues within social networks, using
Facebook as a case study.
