Theme:
The symposium presents the results of the project ?Mitbestimmte
Medienpolitik? (Co-determined media policy) within an international
framework. Among others, the project investigated the role of unions as
governance stakeholders of media policy and the tasks of the supervising
bodies. The models discussed in Germany and the debate on regulation,
participation and co-determination in the electronic media are relevant to
other European countries as well. For instance, the English model with its
regulation authority Ofcom and the BBC Trust provide insights into the
German debate about the subject. Poland just enacted a new Broadcasting Act
benefiting, among others, from German counselling. Media policy increasingly
takes place at a European level: this is the reason why academic results in
Europe and practical experience should be brought together and then
discussed. During the symposium, further comparative studies about the
subject will be presented. The conference aims at building a bridge between
scholarship and practice, so the emphasis is on exchanging knowledge and
experiences. In addition to scholars, other experts such as members of
broadcasting councils and media commissions, stakeholders from the unions
and from other organisations are invited to contribute, discuss and
participate. After the keynote speeches, three parallel workshops will
portray the subject from the different angles: Regulation,
Participation,Co-determination.
