Call for papers

The British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS) and the New Zealand 
Studies Association (NZSA) are pleased to announce that they will hold a 
joint annual conference at the University of Kent in Canterbury in April 
2005. [This is the 30th Annual Conference of BACS and the 12th Annual 
conference of NZSA].

Proposals for 20-minute papers, to be presented in either English or 
French, are invited from any single disciplinary or multidisciplinary 
viewpoint on the theme of 'Small Nations, Big Neighbours' in relation to 
Canada and New Zealand. Small Nations in this context may be conceptualised 
not only in terms of nation-states (Canada, New Zealand) but also in terms 
of 'stateless' nations (Quebec, First Nations/Indigenous Peoples, minority 
groups, etc). Equally, Big Neighbours can be conceptualised in broad terms 
(USA, Australia, Anglophone & Francophone Canadians, the UK, East-Asia, the 
South Pacific and other Pacific Rim countries, majority groups, etc). The 
interrelationship between small nations and big neighbours is 
multidimensional and dynamic, involving a complex interplay of factors 
affecting the political, social and cultural fabric of the relevant 
peoples, cultures and nations involved. This conference aims to draw 
together these complexities in lively, multi- and inter-disciplinary debate 
and discussion.

Proposals in the form of an abstract of 200-300 words and a one-paragraph 
CV (including email address, institutional affiliation and postal address), 
preferably by email, should be submitted by 1st December 2004 at the 
latest. Please do not send complete papers or CVs longer than one 
paragraph. All submissions will be acknowledged by email.

Postgraduate students are especially welcome to submit a proposal and there 
will be a concessionary conference fee for students. BACS & NZSA regret 
that they are unable to assist participants with travel and accommodation 
costs.

Appel à communications

L'association britannique d'études canadiennes et néo-zélandaises ont le 
plaisir d'annoncer leur colloque commune qui se tiendra à l'université de 
Kent à Canterbury en avril 2005 (30e colloque annuelle de BACS et 12e 
colloque de NZSA).

Nous invitons tout proposition pour des communications de 20 minutes (à 
presenter en anglais ou en français) d'un point de vue uni- ou 
multidisciplinaire sure le thème 'petits nations, grands voisins' et ayant 
un rapport avec le Canada et la Nouvelle Zélande.  Les 'petites nations' 
peuvent aussi bien comprendre des états (Canada, NZ) que des nations 
dépourvues d'état (Québec, Autochtones/Peuples Indigènes, groups 
minoritaires, etc).  De même, les 'grands voisins' peuvent être interpretés 
de façon large (Etats-Unis, l'Australie, Canadiens Anglophones & 
Francophones, Grande Bretagne, Asie Orientale, et autres pays du Bassin 
pacifique, groupes majoritaires, etc).  Les relations entre petites nations 
et leurs grands voisins sont multidimensionelles et dynamiques, comprenant 
un jeu complexe de facteurs touchant des aspects politiques, sociaux et 
culturels des peuples en question.  La colloque a pour but de rassembler 
ces aspects complexes en un débat et une discussion à la fois multi- et 
interdisciplinaire.

Les propositions doivent prendre la forme d'abstracts de 200-300 mots ainsi 
que d'un CV d'un paragraphe (comprenant d'adresse e-mail, l'appartenance 
institutionelle et l'adresse postale).  Elles doivent être envoyées de 
préférence par courrier électronique et doivent arriver au plus tard 
le      1er décembre 2004.  Ne pas envoyer le texte complet de la 
communication ni de CV de plus d'un paragraphe.  Tous les envois recevront 
un accusé de réception par courrier électronique.

Les étudiants-chercheurs à partir de la licence sont particulièrement 
encouragés à envoyer leur proposition et un tariffe réduit leur sera 
proposé.  BACS et NZSA ont le regret de ne pas pouvoir participer aux frais 
de voyage ni de logement.
