Call For Papers
The Intensive European Programme for Doctoral Research in Communication 
brings together members of the European research community to summer 
schools in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and 
cultural studies. The programme combines contributions from international 
experts and junior scholars, and takes the form of lectures, seminars, 
presentations, and workshops. The summer school aims to provide a 
supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their 
ongoing work and meet students and academics from other countries, 
establishing valuable contacts for the future. It also presents the 
international landscape of communication and media research, helping the 
students situate themselves on it.

Participating institutions under the Socrates Programme in 2004 include the 
universities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Grenoble, Helsinki, Lund, 
Madrid, Stirling, Tampere and Westminster; associated will also be the 
universities of Bergen and Roskilde. Like in 2003, the European Consortium 
for Communication Research (ECCR) is involved in the 2004 programme in 
order to promote professional exchange and the research activities of 
doctoral students within ECCR. Furthermore, this time also Finland's 
neighbouring areas in the Baltic countries and Russia will be involved.

The overall theme of the 2004 summer school is 'Media Industries in 
Changing Europe'.  The research community faces a challenge in 
understanding the changing media landscape in Europe - in terms of its 
ownership, regulation, role in politics, economy, everyday life, etc. 
Approaches to these issues include, but are not restricted to, the 
political economy of media structures and the cultural studies of media 
content.

Each student will prepare a paper of max. 10 A4 pages (approximately 3000 
words) to be discussed in the seminars.  The paper should be a report of 
the student's ongoing doctoral research and not a conventional conference 
paper or a report of findings. Rather, it is expected that the student will 
briefly present the focus of the research and then take up aspects of the 
research process: methodological, theoretical and practical issues on which 
he/she would like to receive feedback.

The deadline for papers is the middle of June after which they will be 
placed on the summer school's website in order that each student and tutor 
can read then in advance. Students will be chosen by professors at the 
participating institutions on the basis of their abstracts, which should 
also be submitted to the coordinators. Abstracts of about 150 words should 
include details of research, intellectual framework, methods and potential 
findings. Deadline for abstracts is early April.

There is a special subsidised fee for members of the participating 
institutions: 200 euros which includes board and lodging for the duration 
of the summer school. Members of the ECCR (and other selected institutions) 
will be charged 500 euros.

The co-ordinators of the 2004 summer school are Professor Kaarle 
Nordenstreng at the University of Tampere and Dr Hannu Nieminen at the 
University of Helsinki.
