WHOSE UNIVERSITY?
A Day of Discussions and Workshops
Co-organised by Birmingham University AUT, Birmingham University Guild of
Students, and Department of Cultural Studies and Sociology Working Group
SATURDAY MAY 10th 2003

VENUE: THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM (ARTS BUILDING)
The day is intended as an opportunity for analysis of dramatic shifts in
higher education, including what may be done with regard to them.
Speakers to include: Miriam David, Maureen McNeil, Jackie Stacey, Lynne
Jones MP, Ann Gray, Richard Johnson, staff/student representatives from
University of Leicester and other universities, speakers from NUS, AUT and
Guild of Students
Discussion topics to include: Implications of the White Paper; The New
Managerialism; University Governance and Accountability; Access,
Inequalities and the Right to Education; Universities, Democracy and the
Scholarly Community; The University as a Community Trust; University
Governance and the Performance of Managers
Workshop topics: Towards an Alternative White Paper; Cultural Studies in
2003 and Beyond; Organising in Higher Education: Reclaiming Education for
Academics and Students; Future Actions: What can be done, and how?
Students and staff from all disciplines and all universities, parents and
all others with an interest in universities are all very welcome
