[eccr] academic workshop on Connectiviy and the Media

Wed Jan 08 12:13:11 GMT 2003

Academic Workshop

"Connectivity of the Media - Network Society and Media Communication"

Date/Place: 31 January 2003 - 1 February 2003 in the Conference Centre Augustinerkloster in Erfurt, Germany

Organising Body: Section Media Sociology of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft

"Connectivity" and "Network (Society)" became key terms within academic debates of recent years: Manuel Castell's description of the current information age as characterised by connectivity on many levels leads him to perceive of societies in terms of network societies. John Tomlinson depicts - parallel to Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck - the globalised world as one of increasing connectedness. Furthermore, Ien Ang refers in her analysis of contemporary Asian identity to the challenges posed by the ever-growing cultural connectivity. "Connectivity" and "Network (Society)" are more and more important concepts in the academic discussion within social sciences and cultural studies.
The aim of the workshop is to prove the reach of these concepts for media research within media and communication studies and other disciplines. This will be done not only by theoretical reflections, but also by discussing empirical research within the paradigm of connectivity and network society.
