Council adopts '.EU' and e-accessibility Resolution
In short:
During its meeting of 25 March the Telecoms Council adopted a Resolution on the accessibility of public websites, discussed eEurope 2005 and approved the '.EU' domain name.
Issues:
The meeting of the Transport and Telecommunications Council on 25 March covered:
* Interchange of Data between Administrations (IDA): a debate on inclusion of non-Member States and the adaption of the IDA programme to e.g. new eEurope plans;
* Trans-European Telecom networks: a general orientation, Ministers expressed a desire to come to an agreement in first reading in EP;
* Accessibility of public websites: adoption of Council Resolution on e-accessibility;
* eEurope 2005: a debate focussed on broadband, accessibilty, e-government, e-content and IPv6;
* Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN): an update on the state of play of internet governence;
* '.EU' top level domain name: the adoption of the Regulation.
The Council also debated the issues of illegal content and e-security.
Next steps:
* The ICANN structure features on the agenda of the EU-US Information Society Dialogue on 11 April 2002;
* An eEurope 2005 Action Plan is to be presented to the Telecommunications Council of 17-18 June and will be submitted to the Sevilla Council on 21-22 June 2002;
* During the first half of 2004 the Commission is to provide the Council with a progress report on e-accessibility;
