1. UK - BBC's Davies has a bad week at the office (FT)
The BBC chairman's remarks about middle-class viewers have brought
unflattering reviews. This week, Mr Davies suggested the BBC should
pay less heed to the "white, middle-class, middle-aged and well
educated" people who complain that the BBC is "dumbing down" and pour
a little more of its energies into entertaining "the Asian teenager
on the streets of Leicester".

2. EU - Microsoft makes moves to avoid Brussels fine (FT)
Microsoft has made concessions that addressed some of the key
concerns raised by Brussels. It would make available to the industry
information on two technical standards,  an encryption language
called Kerberos and an internet standard known as Common Internet
File System.

4. Nordic countries - Child pornography on the Internet (Nordic
Council)
The Nordic countries place great emphasis on ensuring effective
measures to combat child pornography on the Internet. On the
initiative of the Committee of Nordic Government Officials, the
Nordic criminal law expert group prepared a survey of the forums
where the question was already being treated in order to evaluate the
usefulness of a Nordic collaboration and to direct the work towards
areas where there could be a need to implement Nordic initiatives.

5. UK - Priest admits child porn charge (BBC)
A senior Catholic priest was caught with more than 30,000
photographs and computer images of children involved in sexually
depraved acts, a court has heard.  Father Michael O'Kelly, 47, the
Dean of Reading, pleaded guilty at Newbury Magistrates Court in
Berkshire to a single charge of making indecent pseudo-photographs of
a child between June 1997 and October 2000.

13. UK - Communications bill to relax cross-media ownership (FT)
The government has reaffirmed its plan to relax cross-media
ownership rules in its communications bill to be published next
month. The long-awaited draft bill has the potential to kick start
consolidation of the commercial terrestrial television sector. The
relaxation of limits on ownership of cross-media could spark a wave
of mergers and acquisitions involving the ITV companies, Channel 5
and BSkyB.

15. Deutschland - Bitkom bekräftigt Forderung nach individuellen
Vergütungsverfahren für digitale Medien (Heise)
Der Bundesverband für Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und
neue Medien e. V. (Bitkom) hat seine Forderung nach modernen Urheber-
Vergütungssystemen für digitale Medien bekräftigt. Sollten sich die
Verwertungsgesellschaften mit ihrer Forderung nach Pauschalvergütung
durch die Gerätehersteller durchsetzen, müssten die deutschen
Verbraucher jährlich einen dreistelligen Millionenbetrag aufbringen.

18. UK - Sainsbury's sexy SMS job ad causes complaints (Yahoo UK)
A text message advertising jobs at a local store was sent by
Sainsbury's to hundreds of people in Stockport, telling them that the
sender needed them and couldn't get enough of them. The mobile
numbers were obtained from a list compiled by people who had
downloaded ring tones.

20. ICANN To Move Forward With Restructuring, Not Elections

The body that manages the Internet's worldwide addressing system
today voted to begin the process of restructuring itself, apparently
abandoning plans to establish a global mechanism that would allow
ordinary Internet users to directly elect some of the group's

30. Netherlands - Abfab can no longer spam XS4ALL subscribers (Press
Release)
Abfab has been ordered to stop inconveniencing XS4ALL subscribers by
sending them spam, unsolicited commercial bulk mail. If it persists,
it will face a penalty of EUR50 per e-mail, up to a maximum of EUR2.5
million. That is the result of the summary proceedings instituted by
XS4ALL against the Amstelveen-based company. The judge at the
Amsterdam Court has ruled that XS4ALL has no legal conveyance
obligation and can therefore ban third parties from sending spam
through its systems.

32. Sweden - Court holds forum owner responsible (kuro5hin.org)
A Swedish court held the editor of the web edition of Aftonbladet (a
major Swedish newspaper) responsible for comments published on their
forum, and the forum has subsequently closed. Aftonbladet was one of
the first Swedish newspapers with a web edition. They are still the
most visited website in Sweden, and they have up until today
encouraged their visitors to voice their opinion on different news
items in an online forum called 'Tyck till' ("Your opinion").

37. EU - Commissioner stresses importance of content (ContentWire)
In Barcelona, politicians must focus on electronic information.
"European politicians must recognise the importance of content and
applications, whether they are provided by commercial or public
services, and ensure that they are available not just through
computer terminals but also through mobile phones, televisions and
other innovations", says Mr Erkki Liikanen, Europe's commissioner for
enterprise and the Information Society at the start of a Barcelona
summit. "While this development is mainly a function of the market,
governments have a role to play since the public sector is the single
largest holder and producer of content in Europe. I intend to table
draft legislation shortly to encourage wider use of such public-
sector information for added value services".
