EU Parliament adopts Directive on postal liberalisation

In short:
On 13 March 2002, the European Parliament adopted the Directive on the further opening to competition of the EU postal services. 
  
Brief news:
Adopting the Directive with regard to the further opening to competition of EU postal services, the Parliament added the following amendments to the Commission and Council common position: 

*    It called for a return to the initial definition (in Directive 97/67/EC) of "items of domestic correspondence" on the grounds that the reference to "standard mail services" was no longer necessary, given that special services had been deleted from the initial Commission proposal by both Council and Parliament; 
*    Every two years, on the first occasion no later than 31 December 2004, the Commission shall submit a report to the Parliament and the Council on the application of this Directive, including the appropriate information about developments in the sector, particularly concerning economic, social, employment and technological aspects, as well as about quality of service; 
*    Where appropriate, such a report shall be accompanied by proposals to the European Parliament and the Council. 

The Council should now adopt this final document.
