[eccr] US convergence changes competitive landscape
Thu Feb 28 21:53:04 GMT 2002
Newspapers will not become a casualty of the digital age, but news
producers must learn how to navigate the changing competitive landscape,
according to a keynote speech by New York Times Chairman and Publisher
Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. at Seybold Seminars New York.
Mr Sulzberger believes that the effectiveness of information
distribution will determine a news provider's strength, and that rather
than competing mainly with other big newspapers. He also discussed media
convergence issues, claiming that the most difficult decisions for
future publishers will be choosing the most appropriate format to
communicate a particular story, whether it is in print, on the Internet,
via broadcast or a combination of these.
Future convergence appears certain, and newspapers must be ready to
accept these changes. "The word 'news' defines us," Mr Sulzberger said,
"but we will fail as a business if we focus only on paper."
