[eccr] European Survey on Media and Minorities

Wed Feb 27 15:26:32 GMT 2002

The On-Line/More Colour in the Media network has
completed the survey it undertook to map which
organisations are involved in media and minorities
issues. The survey was meant specifically to
locate migrant, refugee, and anti-racism
organisations in Europe that currently implement
projects or activities to influence media policies
and portrayal practices.

Weve received over 50 completed forms, and will
continue our exploration of examples of good
practice. Researcher Jessika ter Wal of the
European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic
Relations (ERCOMER) will do an analysis of the
survey and compile a database of the organisations
that responded and their activities. These will
eventually be made available through the
Multicultural Skyscraper.

Workshop on Empowerment and Participation of
Migrants and Refugees in the Media

On 7 and 8 December 2001, the
On-Line/More Colour in the Media network organised
the workshop Empowerment and participation of
migrants and refugees in the media. It has
invited around fifteen representatives of migrant
and refugee grassroots organisations to explore
ways to realise and make better use of contacts
with the media, and achieve a fairer portrayal of
their work and the communities they represent.

Community and NGO initiatives are instrumental in
mobilising, informing and educating minority
groups, empowering them as critical media
consumers and producers. At the same time they are
among those who have the hardest time influencing
and gaining access to the media. A more extensive
network of contacts and various forms of
international cooperation will make it easier for
migrant and refugee groups to deal with the media.
On-Line/More Colour in the Media therefore hopes,
in bringing selected initiatives together in this
workshop, to foster an exchange of experiences and
good practice and facilitate the sharing of
resources, tools, and contacts.

Ideas that will be assessed and elaborated in the
workshop include producing a handbook on
empowerment and participation, organising a
conference on the topic, and initiating joint
project development on a transnational level. A
specific focus will be on the role of migrant and
refugee NGOs in monitoring the media and possible
opportunities for setting up a European media
watch project.
